Overview
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information N-EXTENT (the "Site", "we") collects, why, and what choices you have. We try to collect as little as we need: you can read and watch everything on the Site without an account, and our readership statistics are designed so that we do not need to know who you are.
In short:
- We do not store raw IP addresses in our application database or our analytics.
- We do not use persistent browser fingerprinting, advertising trackers, or third-party analytics.
- We do not store your precise geolocation.
- We do not sell your personal information.
Account Registration
If you create a reader account, we store:
- your name and email address;
- your password, only as a one-way cryptographic hash — we never store or see the password itself;
- whether and when your email address was verified;
- your account role and status (for example, an active reader account);
- the time of your last sign-in, and when the account was created and last updated.
We use this information to provide your account, let you sign in, confirm your email address, help you recover access, and keep accounts secure. You can view and edit your name and email address from your account page.
Authentication and Security
To protect accounts we limit repeated sign-in and email requests. For this, a short-lived counter is kept for a few minutes and then discarded. The counter is identified by a one-way hash of the email address and network address making the request — not by the address itself. Password-reset links contain a single-use token that is stored only in hashed form and expires after a limited time.
Content Analytics
To show which articles and videos are being read (for example "Most Read"), we record a page view when someone opens an article or video. Each record contains only:
- which piece of content was viewed (its type and ID);
- when it was viewed;
- the domain of the referring website, if your browser sent one (for example
news.example.com, never the full address); - a privacy-friendly visitor hash.
The visitor hash is a one-way value calculated from your network address and browser type together with a secret that changes every day. It is used only to avoid counting the same visitor twice within a short period. It cannot be reversed to reveal your IP address, and because the secret changes daily it cannot be used to follow you from one day to the next. The raw IP address used in the calculation is not stored. Analytics records are not linked to your account.
Cookies and Sessions
We only use cookies that are needed for the Site to work:
- a session cookie, which keeps you signed in as you move between pages;
- a security (CSRF) cookie, which protects forms against cross-site request forgery;
- a "remember me" cookie, only if you tick "Keep me signed in" when signing in.
Session data is stored on our servers and linked to your account while you are signed in. We do not record your IP address or browser details with it. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies. Our fonts are served from our own servers. Embedded videos are loaded from YouTube (in its privacy-enhanced mode) or Vimeo; those services may set their own cookies when you play a video, under their own privacy policies.
Email Communications
If you have an account, we send you service emails only: a link to confirm your email address, password-reset links you request, and, where necessary, important notices about your account or these policies. We do not send marketing or newsletter emails based on your account. Emails are delivered through an email delivery provider, which processes your name and email address for that purpose.
Data Retention
- Account data is kept while your account exists. If your account is deleted at your request, we delete or anonymise it unless we must keep something to meet a legal obligation.
- Content analytics records are automatically deleted after 90 days.
- Session records expire after a period of inactivity and are then removed.
- Password-reset tokens expire after a short time and can be used only once.
- Email delivery records held by our email provider are kept according to that provider's retention settings.
Service Providers
We use trusted providers to run the Site — for hosting and databases, file and media storage, and email delivery. They process personal information only on our behalf and as needed to provide their service. Like most web hosts, our hosting infrastructure may process network addresses in standard, short-lived request and security logs as part of operating and protecting the service. Some providers may process data outside your country; where that happens we rely on the safeguards available to us under applicable law.
Legal Obligations
We may disclose information where we are required to by law, regulation, or valid legal process, or where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, safety or security of our users, the public, or the Site. Where data-protection laws such as the GDPR apply, we rely on the following grounds: providing the account you asked for (contract), keeping the Site secure and understanding readership in a privacy-friendly way (legitimate interests), and meeting legal requirements (legal obligation).
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you;
- correct it — you can update your name and email address yourself from your account page;
- ask us to delete it;
- object to or ask us to restrict certain processing;
- receive a copy of your information in a portable format;
- complain to your local data-protection authority.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Data Deletion and Contact
To make a privacy request — including asking us to delete your account — or to ask a question about this policy, email us via the contact details published on the Site. Please send the request from the email address on your account so we can confirm it is you. We will respond within the time required by applicable law.
The Site is intended for adult readers and is not directed at children.
Policy Updates
We will update this policy when the way we handle personal information changes. The "Last updated" date above shows when it was last revised, and where changes are significant we will take reasonable steps to let account holders know.
